18 March 37 - The Roman Senate annuls Tiberius will and proclaims Caligula emperor. 978 - St Edward the Martyr, King of the English, is murdered at Corfe Castle on the orders of his stepmother, eager to see her son Ethelred crowned. 1229 - Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II crowns himself king of Jerusalem during the Sixth Crusade. 1776-UK repeals the Stamp Act. 1848-The rebellion cancer from France, which overthrew King Louis-Philippe, has now spread to the German Confederation, where a riot and rebellion erupt in Berlin. As people clamor for democracy and freedom, the King of Prussia’s troops fire on the protesters, killing nearly 300; commence great rebellion in the German confederation. 1865-Confederate Congress adjourns for the last time; Union forces are closing in to destroy the rebellion. 1871 - In the wake of the Prussian conquest of France, Paris socialists rebel against the newly created Third French Republic. 1915-World War I; Continue Gallipoli campaign; 18 UK and French battleships launch heavy bombardment against the narrowest part of the Strait; French battleship Bouvet explodes and capsizes with its entire crew after striking a mine; Royal Navy minesweepers, largely crewed by civilians, retreat under Ottoman fire, leaving the Ottoman minefields largely intact; battleships HMS Irresistible and Inflexible both strike mines and sustain critical damage; battleship HMS Ocean is damaged trying to aid Inflexible; both Inflexible and Ocean are destroyed; French battleships Suffren and Gaulois are also badly damaged; Anglo-French abandon attempts to force the Strait open solely by naval power. 1916-World War I; Russians launch the Battle of Naroch Lake in order to relieve pressure on the Western Front. 1921 - Bolshevik soldiers finally put down a rebellion by Russian sailors at Kronstadt, the Russian Baltic fleet headquarters near Petrograd (now St Petersburg). 1940 - Hitler and Mussolini meet at the Brenner pass in the Alps; it is agreed that Italy shall soon join the war started by Germany. 1945-1,250 USAAF bombers attack Berlin, further reducing the city to rubble. 1962 - Algerian nationalists sign agreements with France ending their war against the colonial power and moving towards independence. 1965 - Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov makes the first space walk. 1970 - Cambodian head of state Prince Norodom Sihanouk is deposed. 1978 - Former Pakistan Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto is found guilty of ordering the assassination of an opponent and sentenced to death. 2000 - Taiwan voters elect as president Chen Shui-bian, leader of a pro-independence party, ending more than five decades of Nationalist Party rule.
