18 years ago I walked into a gym for the first time. It was following spraining my ankle playing basketball, and after spending some time on crutches and going through physiotherapy, my physio said I should look at getting into a gym and doing some strength training to help build the ankle up again and prevent further injuries. That month I made the trek from Rossland, BC down the hill to Trail in order to go to the community centre that had a pool and small weight room. After spending some time working on leg extensions and calf raises as the physio suggested, I started looking at other exercises, and spent more and more time in the gym essentially playing around and figuring out what movements worked what parts of the body, and going way too hard for what I could actually manage. This was the beginning of me enjoying weight lifting. Flash forward to today and Ive managed to turn what was a passion and hobby into a fairly successful career. I still spend my days playing around in the gym, seeing what works and how, and have the pleasure to help others find easier ways to get to their results, whatever they may be. I also teach other trainers and fitness professionals, medical professionals, and rehab professionals what Ive found, which is somewhat surreal for me. All from being offhandedly suggested to go to a gym to get over an ankle injury.
