18 years ago on October 8th, my college roommate, a dear friend and otherworldly poet, passed away. All those years Ive struggle with the words to honor him and to deal with this loss. I gave his eulogy at the funeral but I was only 21 and, in my opinion, I failed then to truly capture him and what he meant to me and to others. But today Duende literary magazine has published my Elegy for the one and only James Mitchell Anderson. I call it a zemi poem. In Taino religion and folklore, zemis were crafted objects that functioned as keys to the spirit world, direct lines to those that have passed. They were said to actually hold a part of the souls of those being honored inside of them. Heres mine for Jim.
