18 years ago today, Irish voters said Yes to lifting the ban on divorce by the most slender of margins (50.3% to 49.7%). However a poll conducted a few years later revealed that 75% would vote Yes if the referendum was held again. Social progress is like that. Contentious at the time, but once the change is made (and the sky has not fallen in) people look back and wonder why the issue in question was even controversial. So it was on the likes of contraception and divorce and so it will be on marriage equality.
