1832 ABOLITION A group of females of color in Salem, Mass, formed the first black womens antislavery society in the United States on February 22, 1832. The abolitionist press documents the existence of a variety of womens antislavery societies during this period. Free black women actively participated in the racially mixed societies. HOSPITAL The Georgia Infirmary in Savannah, Ga, founded by whites, was the first hospital and asylum established for the relief and protection of aged and afflicted blacks. It was chartered in 1832, and an organizational meeting was held at the Exchange, a mercantile building, on January 15, 1833.
