1856 Rome in 1856-1857 Unheard of luck on the part of Bro. Galabert, to have he opportunity of doing his theology in Rome which will cover three years : 1855-1856, 1856- 57 and 1857-1858 crowned with a doctorate at the end in Canon Law, the taking of his perpetual vows on the 30th of June 1856,the grace of priesthood on June 7th 1857. His first year in Rome was one of getting acquainted: he visited Roman Basilicas. he solicited papal audiences, he discovered different places in Rome, and especially je contacted Roman Congregations ro obtain indults, rescripts and interpretations of decrees in their quality of intercessors of the Roman congregations. One has taken the habit in the ultramontane milieu to ask Rome its opinion about all things, Thus Bro. Galabert informs himself about questions being discussed and is very careful to relate these practices to Assumptionist Religious Life. Quite at ease in Roman milieus,. he easily transforms himself in to a Roman with its uses and customs, notably to inform himself of all the stories circulating and relating, the rumors circulating without fail and relating everything to the noises brought forth to the great catholic universe.: - Private Masses at Christmas and the question of the communion of the faithful at these masses. - The vow in favor of the souls of Purgatory according to the custom in Rome. - Which procedures he must take to get the Brief of Praise and the Decree of Praise for the Congregation - The ongoing work on the Ceremonial and its redaction. - The keeping in a tabernacle of the reserve in Churches that are not Parish Churches - the Examination of the Constitutions at Assumption and the re-touches one must bring to them. - the question of Religious Poverty in the Law of Religious - the Reports of the Vicar General in the Chapters of the Cathedral These are as many particular questions on which he consults the Roman Congregations and previously has solicited without fail the opinion of the canonist Msgr. Chaillot with whom Assumption has a special link. This year 1855 is the year of the doctrine of Rosmini, object if sharp polemics between Jesuits and Rosmanians, is considered without error but continues to raise up discussions, until the opposite is said by Leo XIII on 1888. Simultaneously the Congregation de statu regularium (The state of the regulars - Belonging to a religious order and bound by its Rules = Religious ) by different pronouncements, introduced the perfect common life at least in the houses of formation, Institututes of simple vows before their solemn ones, so as to free the candidates who so wish to leave if they so wish. A Concordat is signed between Austria and Rome in 1855, which should have brought forth an end to Lay Josephism and some liberal principles; yet the question of mixed marriages is not resolved. Another Concordat is signed with Portugal in 1857 which recognizes the interference of Portugal even in the English territories of India. The cardinal Alessandro Barnabo, very energetic and efficacious Prefect of the Propaganda, is somewhat attuned to the Latinisation Orient al Catholic Community but he is so without excess and takes into consideration the tradition which is proper to the Oriental Churches. In 1857 Bro. Galabert is the ocular and direct witness of a new feast on the liturgical calendar with the erection of at the Spain Square (place d ’Espagne) of a statue to the Immaculate Conception that the Sovereign Pontiff has the habit of coronating on the 8th of December, a legal holiday in Italy, usually with numerous assistance of the Roman Population. Pius IX solemnly inaugurated the new basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, on the 10th of December 1854, which had suffered a fire July 182I during the last days of the Pontificate of Pius VII, for the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in the presence of cardinals and numerous bishops who had come in numbers and whose name are inscribed on marble slabs on the wall of the apse. That same year the university milieus is going to be concerned with the departure of Fr. Passaglia, Jesuit professor at the Roman College, whose works of vulgarization and controversy are hotly debated by another famous professor Fr. Perrone. Lastly, the French diplomacy regarding the Holy See took a new turn with the replacement of the ambassador Mr. de Rayneval by the Count of de Gramont less ‘Roman’. It is in August 1857 that the Holy See got an official hymn, when Pius IX adopted the march without words entitled ‘Musica Festiva’ ( Festive Music) composed by the Austrian Hallmayr in the Viennese style of the times and for this reason was called ‘saltarello’ (‘ jumpy’) by the per finicky critics.
