1858 ~ ARCHER ~ The Florida Town Improvement Company, owned by the Florida Railroad Company, laid out a town here and named it Archer after General James T. Archer Floridas first Secretary of State (1845-49). The first trains stopped in Archer in 1859. This view shows the tracks of the Florida Central & Penninsular, one of the successor lines of the original Florida Railroad Company, and the tracks of the Eagle Mine Branch. This branch served to connect a phosphate mine south of Archer, Williston and Morriston in the community of Early Bird. The Eagle Mine Branch was eventually taken up, leaving only the track SouthWest to Cedar Key. This line ultimately came under ownership of the Seaboard Air Line Railway, before being abandoned in 1932. The Plant system built tracks through Archer just North of this location, toward Tampa, and became part of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. Photo Courtesy of the Archer Historical Society.
