1872: Moriz Kaposi of the Vienna School of Medicine was the first to discover that lupus can attack the entire body, not just the face. He noted that is also led to symptoms such as fever, weight loss, joint swelling and ultimately death (until treatments were discovered almost a century later). Kaposi distinguished two forms of lupus: the discoid type, which affects only the skin, and the disseminated (systemic) form, which affects the whole body.
