19 years ago at the age of 52 I suffered an ascending aortic dissection. I was lucky to have been taken to Mary Washington hospital where when they couldnt figure out what was wrong in the ER, they called in Dr. John Armitage who was the only surgeon in the area who had experience. It was near midnight when the surgery began, but I came through to have the next 19 years and see my children graduate, get married, and give Twila and me 4 great grand-kids. I have had all of my aorta repaired except the arch in three surgeries, the last by Dr. Coselli in Houston. I first found internet support from aorticdissection/, then this page and the johnritterresearchprogram.org/. I was an IT specialist with the Federal government and luckily could get to retirement. It is comforting to see the number of survivors continuing to grow as the word is spread about the condition. I was extremely lucky to have survived and now know more that I ever wanted to know about this problem, but thankful to celebrate my 19th re-birthday.
