1914-2014 On 28th June 1914 the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Duchess Sophie were assassinated. This set in motion the beginnings of the Great War. The rumblings of war spread quickly throughout Europe until on the 4th of August 1914 The United Kingdom declared war on Germany when it invaded Belgium. Newspapers reported the every day happenings of the war and also the deaths, not forgetting what people at home faced.
