1923, local television personality Sally Starr was born in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1950, Starr became the host of Philadelphia’s highest-rated children’s TV program, Popeye Theater, in which she presented cartoons, Three Stooges shorts, live acts, and special features –all broadcast live from Channel 6 (WPVI-TV). She also worked as an announcer, writer, producer, and was the first top-rated female disk jockey in the country. When Starr’s program was cancelled in 1971, local viewers responded with the largest mail protest in the station’s history. Starr died on January 27, 2013.
