1928. I have to re-post this every once in a while because its so amazing. Joe Olivers West End Blues played by Louis Armstrongs second Hot Five. An incredible opening cadenza by Louis, then four sections each a world of its own. The first played as a group, then a sweet trombone solo by Fred Robinson, then a conversation between Jimmy Strong on tenor sax and Armstrongs beautifully smooth vocal, then an unaccompanied piano solo by Earl Fatha Hines, then another group thing, everyone holding a sublime chord with the trombone dropping in the seventh before the modulation and Louis sliding a last solo in, then Hines cascading down to the bottom of his piano and the heart rending close followed by Zutty Singletons final finger cymbals. What a perfect piece of music for the ages. Lil Armstrong is in the picture shown, but was eventually replaced by Earl Hines. Mancy Carr on banjo.
