1936, May 21 - My Grandpa & his 56# salmon. This article was from the Mobridge, So. Dakota paper: FISH CAUGHT TOO LATE TO WIN $1500 CONTEST Clarence Smelser, who formerly lived near Mobridge and now lives at Milwaukie, Oregon, broke a 15 year record last week when he caught a 56-pound salmon in the Willamette River, near Oregon City. Mr. Smelser was with his son, Richard, in a row boat in the river when he made the catch, battling for more than an hour before he managed to land the fish. According to a letter received from Mrs. Smelser, no bait is used in fishing for salmon. The fish do not eat after they leave the salt water and come up the rivers to spawn. Fisherman use a bright spinner which enrages the salmon so that they attack it. If Mr. Smelser had caught his big fish two weeks sooner he would have won several slamon fishing contest in which an $800 motorboat and $700 in other prizes were awarded. The salmon which was caught 15 years ago outweighed Mr. Smelsers fish by only one-half pound. The Tribune has a photograph of Mr. Smelser and his catch, withwhich to prove that this isnt just another fish story. From a local paper: He broke a 15 year record Sunday when he landed a 56-pound Chinook salmon just above the bridge. He was forced to battle the fish for over an hour before he could land it.
