1944/2014 | 70th anniversary of deportation and extermination of Jews from Hungary in Auschwitz On 8 May 1944 SS-Obersturmbannführer Arthur Liebehenschel, the commandant of Auschwitz I and SS garrison was transferred to the post of the commandant in Majdanek concentration camp in Lublin as well labor camps in Warsaw, Radom, Budzyń and Bliżyń. SS-Sturmbannführer Friedrich Hartjenstein, the commandant of Auschwitz II-Birkenau and deputy commandant of Auschwitz I, became the commandant of Natzweiler camp. The function of the leader of the SS garrison in Auschwitz was taken over (until further notice) by the Head of Office D-I in the WVHA (SS Main Economic and Administrative Department), the former Auschwitz commandant SS-Obersturmbannführer Rudolf Höss. SS-Hauptsturmführer Josef Kramer took over the post of the commandant of Auschwitz II-Birkenau. Such a major change in the administration of the camp was connected with the improper preparation for the operation of extermination of Jews deported from Hungary which was noticed after the arrival of first transports on 2 May 1944.
