1950s, Salinas, and youre hungry for a burger and fries....you are 8 years old and its before McDonalds ever moved in. Pick a favorite burger joint. Got it? The cook leans over and asks, Whatll it be? You say, Um, Id like a cheeseburger and fries, please. He takes out a long page & says, White, wheat, potato, sourdough, with/without sesame seeds. Um, white? He says, What kind a meat, kid..regular grade beef, 7 percent beef, ground turkey or chicken, or soy patty? You say, Um, regular? (Your wondering, what is soy burger???). What kind of lettuce...iceburg, red leaf, romaine, spring mix, spinach, arugula, or butter? Um, I guess any kind you say. Garden, organic, or purple tomato slice? You say, Just a red one? Cheese, kid...cheddar, jack, pepper jack, provolone, Italian, or Mexican? Um, American?. Ok, what you want your fries fried in...Peanut, Cocoanut, Canola, Sunflower, or lard?....Um, I think Ill come back later?....Isnt this the way it seems now days to order a burger & fries??? Having said it, what does YOUR favorite old-time burger have on it? Or hot dog?
