1951 Jacksonville Telegram to Governor Warren requesting help with Spivey Juke Joint. Juke Joints (jooks/barrelhouses) were the only place African Americans, migrants and share croppers could go after a long hard week. They would go there for great music, dancing, relaxation, socializing. Maybe some moonshine and gambling too. It was the only place they had to go, they were barded from other establishment in town. There was a movie made in 1942 about a Juke Joint in Florida, Juke Girl. The studio even consulted with a local Jacksonville dancer/waitress working a Juke Join before filming. They became more popular in 30s, 40s and 50s with the younger croud from town who enjoyed the live music and dancing. A few pictures to follow. Florida Memory IMDb Library of Congress
