1958 The Greater St. Louis Citizen’s Committee for Nuclear Information announced a study of baby teeth for traces of fallout. By 1963, St. Louis children had sent in 132,000 teeth and the study showed levels of the radioactive isotope strontium-90 were 50 times higher in kids born after 1950. The study helped convince President Kennedy to agree to the 1963 treaty ending above ground tests. The study continued until 1970.
