1963 I was a nursing student at the Delaware Hospital doing my 3 month Oct, Nov, Dec Psychiatric rotation at St. Elisabeths 8000 patient Federal Hospital in SE Washington, D.C. My roommate Sandy Barnett and I went to hear President Kennedy speak during the Veterans Day celebration of placing a wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Two weeks later, I was accompanying a male rehab patient into downtown D.C. - we went to see the National Cathedral, where he had worked construction and on our way back through mid town to St. Es we heard the news that Kennedy had been assassinated. We went into a bar that had a T.V. and watched the news unfolding. Sandy was dating a Marine, Nelson Bell, who was assigned duty walking alongside the funeral caisson and we joined the throngs of people on the bridge between DC and Arlington to witness the procession. A little later I was on Womens Acute ward when the news showed Lee Harvey Oswald being shot. A few of the women said the reason they were locked up there was because they had had affairs with John F. Kennedy. Nobody believed them, but now, knowing his philandering, they may have been telling the truth.
