1965 - the Bronx - Nothing was more important to my Dad then Family. Subsequently he got 2 apartments for 2 of his brothers at 2117 Virgil Place. 2117 was owned by Mrs. Donnelly, my friend, Joe Donnellys Mom. My Uncle Tony GOODY Barbato was a mailman in Manhattan - but you would never know it. Every day he came home from work he had a 3 piece suit on. My Uncle Frank JOE FAT Barbato was the opposite. He worked in private sanitation. And finally my uncle Bob BOB NELSON Barbato. He and his family lived in the basement apartment of my house at 2128 Virgil. And one more - my Father secured an apartment for his COUSIN at 2121 Virgil Place. I thought it was great having so much Family around but then cancer stepped in. Both my Uncle Tony and my Uncle Frankie had it at the same time. I used to go with my Dad to 2117 to visit his brothers, Joe Fat and Goody. They would BOTH be moaning and crying in pain. And then my Uncle Bob was hit with the dreaded C. My Dad lost 3 of his brothers in a year. Now I might be wrong but all the fight, all the piss and vinegar , all of the confidence that my Old Man had always exuded seem to drain right out of him. My dear Dad passed away on September 8, 1968. Life is tough. Life is not fair. It hurts now just sharing this story !!!!
