1965 Second trip to Gatlinburg TN. 1st trip there was our honeymoon in 1964, actually second part of our honeymoon. The first part we made it from Woodville to Chattanooga before stopping to get some much-needed sleep from a rigorous day and night of activity. We stopped at a small motel on the side of Lookout Mountain for as I said some much needed rest and relaxation. Somewhere about 1:30 or 2:00 AM we got a little hungry and in 1964 there were no fast food restaurants that stayed open late. I pulled our car across the street to a little truck stop to get some cokes and probably a moon pie, can’t recall exactly what we were hungry for at that time of night. I just remember we needed a little extra energy. Our car had just married written all over it along with several other things; it also smelled of sardines that had been place on the engine. As I walked into the truck stop to see a small older lady sitting behind the counter where the cash register was located. When I passed the little old lady on my way to the coke machine, she looked up from the book she was reading and said in a solemn but firm voice “sonny the Vaseline’s not back there it’s over there‘‘ pointing to a direction I was not headed. Back to our second trip to Gatlinburg we were able to drive it straight through without stopping for rest. About 1:30 or 2:00 am we were in bed asleep at the Ramada inn when Glenda started to shake me and saying “get up, get up there is something going on outside”. I sat up to listen and could see lights flashing, car engines running and all kind of things going on just outside our door. I ventured a peak out the window and as I did I could see police cars everywhere. A man behind an open police car door was talking over a mega phone. He was shouting “come out with your hands up”. it appeared he was talking to us. I ran back to the bed pushing Glenda into a corner behind the bed pulling the mattress on top of both of us. I placed my body between her and the window. To say the least we were scared, that word does not do the feeling justice because we were really scared. When the dust settled and our legs regained enough strength to stand and the excitement was over. An officer knocked on the door and apologized for the fright. They had made a very large drug bust in the room next to us. The only thing separating the rooms is a few sheets of thin sheetrock that would not even slow a bullet down. We still stay at the Ramada now but for a few years we didn’t.
