1972 USS Constellation. We were in Yokosuka Japan, and were finally heading home with a short liberty time, just enough time to on load all of the personal items that we had to off load three months earlier when our cruise was extended. Our Chief MAA and the XO were in town together, and they both got loaded. Chief hijacked a rickshaw and pulled XO all over town, going to various bars. They were finally stopped by Shore Patrol and returned to the ship. Needless to say the owner of the rickshaw was none too happy. Chief and XO had to make restitution, and that was the end of it. XO made Captain and given command of the ship a year later and eventually made Admiral. Things were so different in those times, we could get away all kinds of things on liberty. I remember as MAA having the after brow watch in port and letting sailors go back on liberty after they were returned by SP. If they were able to stand and talk clearly, werent bleeding, still had a clean presentable appearance, did not smart off to us and did not commit a serious offence, they were OK. I do think stealing a rickshaw may have got them a night in he brig though.
