John Zeglinski scored for Ryan. 1985 At Northeast High OHara 12, Ryan 7 Kevin Parker, switched from running back to quarterback after OHara started the season 0-2, rushed 22 times for 68 yards and the winning, fourth-quarter TD. Bryan Dempsey (14-63) also ran for a score. Tom Siedzikowski preserved the win with a last-second interception at the OHara 4. For Ryan, rushers Al Settembrino (10-61) and Rick Hollawell (16-53, TD) led the way. 1988 At Villanova Stadium Ryan 6, Carroll 0 Matt Knowles kicked field goals of 24 and 42 yards as Ryan won the CLs first TD-less title game since North and Salesianum battled to a scoreless tie in 1934. Coach John Quinn finally bagged a championship in his 13th Ryan season spread over three stints. Frank Wycheck accumulated 177 yards on 24 carries and added 58 yards on returns. Bill Sachs passed 6-for-13 for 63 yards. 1990 At Villanova Stadium Ryan 20, Carroll 13 (OT) Jamie Sutton passed 15 yards to Jim Stott for the decisive score as Ryan won the first CL title game to go overtime. Brian Hamill kicked field goals of 32 and 39 yards, setting a one-season, city-league record with 11 (in 16 attempts). Mark Ostaszewski rushed 35 times for 130 yards. For Carroll, Sean McGarvey returned a kickoff 86 yards for a TD and star lineman Ray Kane, forced to sit out with a severe knee injury, was presented a game ball by first-year Ryan coach Glen Galeone. 1991 At La Salle University Ryan 13, St. James 0 Mike Erbrick gained 147 yards on 31 carries and Brian Hamill kicked field goals of 28 and 34 yards. Erbrick finished the season with 1,774 yards, the No. 2 total in CL history, and 14 TDs. The Raiders became the first CL team in 29 years to go through the playoffs unscored upon and they allowed just 29 points in 10 games against CL opposition -- the best effort since OHaras 23 in 79. In 20 games against CL opposition in 90 and 91, Ryan yielded just one rushing TD. 1992 At La Salle University Ryan 25, Roman 8 Gene McAleer (six tackles) and Dave McDonald (three interceptions) led a defense that limited Roman to 60 yards total offense and gave Ryan its first unbeaten season (12-0-1) in 25 years of CL competition. McDonald returned one of his pilfers for a 34-yard TD. Jaime Brown carried 24 times for 72 yards and a score. Eugene Small ran for Romans TD. 1993 At La Salle University Ryan 10, Carroll 0 Bill McVey ran 5 yards for a TD on a tight-end reverse and Kevin Wyszynski kicked a 36-yard field goal as Ryan became the first CL team to finish unbeaten against league opposition for a fourth consecutive year (38-0-2). In those 40 games, assistant Lee Marvels defense allowed 3.6 points per game and posted 21 shutouts. Jaime Brown rushed 22 times for 76 yards and caught a 37-yard pass from Adrian Dumchus in the TD drive. 1995 At Northeast La Salle 14, Ryan 7 Wearing heavy padding to protect a break at the base of his left thumb, Mike Durso collected 43 yards and a TD on 10 carries. Kyle Mallach added 50 yards and a score on eight carries. By going 9-for-18 for 109 yards, soph QB Brett Gordon finished the season with 2,136 yards and 23 TDs, one short of the city-leagues record. Keith Lachawiec made four sacks and two other tackles for losses. For Ryan, Chris Cavallaro produced 78 yards and a TD on 18 rushes. 1997 At Northeast SJ Prep 14, Ryan 3 Kevin Komelasky (nine tackles), Victor Hobson and Aaron Brown (seven apiece) led the defense as the Hawklets limited Ryan to Mike Gavaghans 22-yard, first-quarter field goal and won their first championship since 1977. Ryans chances were damaged early in the second quarter when leading rusher Jeff Moore suffered a broken ankle. The Prep scored on Jermaine Slades 6-yard pass from Steve Comly and Browns 62-yard run. Brown ran eight times for 89 yards. Milton Johnson added 93 yards on 20 carries. Johnson and Ryans Joe OConnell (28-106) were the first sophs in CL history to surpass 1,000 yards in a season. Their totals: OConnell (1,147), Johnson (1,032). 1998 At Northeast La Salle 17, Ryan 3 After playing most of the first half at quarterback, Chris Pennington moved to running back and finished with 17 carries for 135 yards and two TDs. His clincher, a 47-yarder, came with 1:45 left. Penningtons replacement, soph Gabe Marabella, passed 6-for-9 for 117 yards. Mike Savage kicked a 39-yard field goal, raising his FG total for the playoffs to four -- all from 39 to 42 yards. Chris Dougherty led the defense with 10 tackles. For Ryan, Joe OConnell rushed 17 times for 60 yards, Nick Colacicco kicked a 38-yard field goal and Glen Galeone Jr., son of Ryans coach, made two receptions for 93 yards.
