1975 - 15 years old and learning to cook. My Mother was working swing shifts that often morphed into double shifts at a nursing home next door to Beverly Hospital. It fell to me and my older sister Donna to serve breakfast and supper. Thats right, supper. Dinner was for the Salem upper class over there in the North Fields. Breakfast on school days was often cold cereal using the powdered milk that that state welfare system provided. It was palatable as long as you served it ice cold. We also had the powdered eggs but learned quickly that they were only edible when hidden in a batter or something similar. On weekends we would cook with real eggs if we had them. The state peanut butter was actually excellent as were the blocks of cheese and they supplemented our creations quite well. Our greatest breakfast accomplishment was something called Eggs A la Goldenrod, straight from the Betty Crocker Cookbook. Supper was just about always a couple of the large cans of Chef Boy-ar-Dee something or other. I havent had a can of that garbage in almost forty years.
