"1977 [the year we came into earthly existence] is a turning point in the history of humanity; it is the year when a post-human perspective takes shape. 1977 is a year charged with ominous signals: in Japan it is the year of youth suicides--784. An enormous scandal is provoked by a chain of infantile suicides, thirteen in the month of October alone, among elementary school children. The generation born in the 1980s is destine to be the first video-electronic generation the first generation to be educated in the milieu where mediatization prevails over any other form of relation with the human body. In the aesthetic and cultural styles of the following decades we witness a cleansing, disembodying process. It is the beginning of a long process of cultural sterilization, whose effects transform the first video-electronic generation into object and subject at once. The clean replaces the dusty, while the bold prevails over the hairy. During the following decade the epidemic danger of AIDS re-semiotizes the entire field of corporeality. Carnal contact is heavy with danger and electricity, becomes either rigid, frozen, or hyper hot in a pathological way. This is prepared the cognitive mutation of the last two decades of the twentieth-century. The organism becomes sensitive to the code and predisposed to connections, permanently interfacing with the digital universe" (Bifo, The Soul at Work, 113-114).
