1982. And this album is still so sonically fascinating and lyrically layered that Im intrigued by a different nuance of a different track every time I listen to it. If youre the literary sort or a fan of weird bits of history, Kate Bush is a bona fide librarian. You just have to dig a little to suss out the references she makes. But its really not necessary to follow all the footnotes to thoroughly enjoy the storytelling of this album... I find it effortlessly transporting. Great before bed in a dark room. It always produces a film roll on the back of my eyelids, strange scenes starring this peculiar wood nymph with a knowing look in her eye. Its weird to think that this rich, complex album came years before Bushs big pop-chart hit-loaded Hounds of Love. The Dreaming feels more like an unexpectedly intense, more challenging follow up to Hounds of Love. But nah, this was just some experimental GENIUS she had to get out of her system before she delivered some of the greatest pop songs of all time. No big deal.
