#1984 was not a prediction, it was a description. Every second person, with a sense of righteous indignation, repeats the meme: #1984 was not supposed to be an instruction manual. But they are all missing the point. Like most speculative fiction, the setting of the narrative in a non-descript future is but a thin veneer behind which is an open critique of the present. So when a government pursues an obviously Orwellian policy, it is not because they did not properly read Orwell, but rather, that Orwell did properly read government. Ie, wake up. 1984 is not a prediction of a possible future. Nor is it a critique of Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia, It is a description of the regime under which we actually live. We, as in, we in the Western democracies (another wonderful use of Orwellian doublespeak!!) We ARE living in 1984. Thats the whole point of the book.
