1995 Beijing. I wanted to share these photos, not wonderful in and of themselves as photos go, but extraordinary in other ways. Those of us from the Once and Future Pavilion who stayed to the bitter end in Huairou took ourselves off off to a Huairou restaurant, on the last night, exhausted at the packing up, to celebrate the end, and to celebrate a birthday. We ate, laughed, sang Happy Birthday.....Then the women at the next table introduced themselves and joined in with the singing, in several languages. Then Lepa, from Women in Black/Serbia, stood up and introduced herself. They wanted to join in the celebrations and explain who they were and what they were doing...as a result of meeting each other at the NGO Forum. They were from all parts of the old Yugoslavia, -Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Hersegovina, -Muslim, Catholic, Serbian Orthodox, sitting together discussing strategies and plans to end the conflict there, one of the bloodiest and most awful conflicts of the modern age. As you can imagine, there were tears in our group and many smiles...much emotion. Thanks Lepa and Women in Black. Never to be forgotten moment from Huairou....
