19th October 2014 Mission Sunday The answer given by Jesus - TopicsExpress

19th October 2014 Mission Sunday The answer given by Jesus to those attempting to entrap him sounds like a clever way out of a no-win situation. If Jesus said that taxes should be paid, he would be considered a friend of the Romans. If he said that taxes should not be paid, he would be termed a trouble maker. From the first part of the reply it is obvious that governments have a legitimate role in Christian life and that taxes should be paid. But what does it mean to “repay to God what belongs to God?” Today’s psalm supplies an answer: “Give the Lord glory and honour . . . the glory due his name.” It means acknowledging all that God has done for us through creation and through Jesus, because of his love for us, just as St. Paul indicates in the second reading. To give God glory and honour is to acknowledge our “nothingness” before him. And to acknowledge that ALL is gift! To give God glory and honour acknowledges that, though Caesar ought to receive his due, One greater than Caesar or Cyrus exists. How do you honour God?
