1MATTHEW 10:24-39 INTRODUCTION A. For a month now, I have learned, first, by GPS, then, by habit and memory, how to get to the address of 4206 Kelway Road here in Baltimore. B. This address is exactly 5.1 miles from Church. C. 4206 Kelway Road is the address where Henry Welcome lives. C. And for a month, Henry and I have learned, shared and enjoyed our radical way of hospitality. D. See, God sent us Pastor Jorge Moreno, a Cuban Pastor who decided to escape the atheist and oppressive system of his homeland and came to the United States and continue to pastor and bring his family of three, his wife and two daughters to America. E. Henry and I have learned many good things from Pastor Jorge. F. One of the important it means to live like a Disciple. G. For example, Pastor Jorge has told us about the 98 miles he and his family walked every week to get to Church, about his broken shoes and scarcity of food. H. In the midst of all this situation, the local government was persecuting him because every Church he was send grew. I. In the sacrifices, scarcity and persecution, Pastor Jorge states he learned to be an obedient, enthusiastic and humble disciple! J. That is exactly what todays Gospel lesson is about. THE TEXT: MATTHEW 10:24-39 I. FIRST, you ought to know that you are a disciple. A. THE DISCIPLE IS BELOW THE AUTHORITY OF HER/HIS MASTER 1. 24 The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. II. SECONDLY, you must remember that it means to learn like a disciple. A. THE DISCIPLE IS EQUAL TO HIS MASTER 1. 25a It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. III. FINALLY, you should, not only learn, but humbly live like a disciple. A. THE DISCIPLE IS NOT EXEMPTED FROM THE SUFFERINGS OF HER/HIS MASTER 1. 25b If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? IV. A DISCIPLE IS HONEST AND PUBLIC IN HER/HIS LIFE AND TESTIMONY A. 26 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. B. 27 What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. V. A DISCIPLE IS BOLD 28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. VI. A DISCIPLE IS A WOMAN, A MAN OF FAITH A. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. B. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. C. 31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. VII. A DISCIPLE IS FAITHFUL, DARING WOMAN, MAN WITH PRIORITIES A. 32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. B. 33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. C. 34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. D. 35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. E. And a mans foes shall be they of his own household. F. 37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. G. 38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. H. 39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
