1st Period Report: Hawks - 3 & Oilers - 0 Are these the same Hawks that blew a 2-goal lead in the first period of Thursdays game versus Ottawa? Personally, I think not, but if this team is the same, then I want whatever Coach Q is feeding them, because it gave them the necessary momentum to really take it to the Oilers this period. Their Stanley Cup Championship-winning swagger is back in the house. The only week spot I can really point out is the poor-ish performance of the power play. They were trying to be too cute, instead of just going back to the basics and simply getting the puck into the Oilers end and then going for a game of chase. Hopefully, Coach Q will give them a few pointers for when they begin the second period finishing off a power play. There were plenty of high points so far (knock wood) and the scoring is only one point. The passing has been right on point, tape to tape, or more dynamic when the situation requires. There was even some physically, though obviously I always want to see more Oilers being squished into the wall, particularly that guy that shoved Carcillo into the net, him I wanted to see squished so hard he oozed oil. Defense has been top-notch, with Seabrook, Keith and Hjalmarsson keeping the Oilers offensemen far from Crawford and requiring them to take shots from further back towards the blue line. Dont even get me started on how many blocked shots (nice going Smith!) there were. As to the scoring: Toews was the first to score, off of bad puck handling by the Oilers, resulting in the Captain being practically left all alone with Saad to attack the goalie. Less then a minute later, Kruger also snuck one past the goalie in the same corner of the net. Seabrook was the last goal, a wicked fast slider right through the Goalies 5-hole. And just like that the Hawks have a comfortable 3-goal lead. For the next period: Dont get comfortable. Dont get complacent. Dont take ANYTHING for granted. Continue to play tough, hard hockey. In Coach Q We Trust. GO HAWKS!!!!
