2.1 Million Tennesseans Can File Free Online Starting Today NASHVILLE — The tax filing season opens Jan. 31, but the Internal Revenue Service today announced the immediate availability of Free File brand-name software -- only at IRS.gov/freefile. About 2.1 million Tennessee filers qualify to do their taxes free online using IRS Free Files brand-name tax software, said IRS spokesman Dan Boone. Taxpayers whose 2013 income was $58,000 or less are eligible to use Free Files tax software at IRS.gov. Others can use the Free File Fillable Forms option at no cost. Fourteen commercial software companies that provide their Free File tax prep products at no cost began offering their products today. The companies will hold tax returns filed now until Jan. 31 when the IRS begins accepting returns. Nationwide, nearly 40 million taxpayers have used Free File since it debuted in 2003. These taxpayers have saved more than an estimated $1.2 billion by using Free File.
