2.12 We turned quickly down an unexpected aisle, but our stalker did too. He seemed to be watching our every move. We quickly checked out with the stuff we had and headed out to the Toyota. Our stalker stood outside to watch us drive away. I guess they dont trust stranger so well in Utah. We hoped we wouldnt see him again. On the way south to Arizona we were cutting across the basin and range, rather than following one of its valleys. There were long flat stretches of a valley and then suddenly were were cutting through a mountain - I mean literally through, it looked like they dynamited notches into the mountain to build the road. Because the mountains were cut away, you could see the rock they were made of. They were an incredible mix of different colored veins, some even glittered. One of these mountains was Big Rock Candy mountain of the song... Oh the buzzin of the bees In the cigarette trees Near the soda water fountain At the lemonade springs Where the bluebird sings On the big rock candy mountain We sang that for a couple of hours. We only really knew the line On the big rock candy mountain so we had to make up the rest of the words. We missed Bryce Canyon and Monument Valley because it was too dark, but later that night we settled in a motel at Flagstaff, Arizona. We would be seeing the Grand Canyon tomorrow and we were both as excited as a cactus waiting for the rain.
