2/4/14 No Unintelligent Breeds By Nan Talleno KYW’s Pet Reporter Never underestimate the intellect of your best friend. Canines may not be able to rationalize as we do but they certainly do possess a level of intelligence, no matter what the breed. Know that there are no such things as “unintelligent breeds” or “dumb dogs.” Just read an article that I completely disagree with as they proceed to label several breeds as the “most unintelligent” sorry but that is untrue and certainly not what I’ have personally experienced. . As a canine behavior specialist, I can assure you that every dog is an individual and that no breed should ever be labeled that as a whole. I’ve seen intelligence in every breed I’ve worked with so far (even those mistakenly labeled) as well as all kinds of mixed breeds. It’s becoming more apparent to researchers and scientists alike, through various studies, that all dogs (no matter the breed) can think and solve problems in ways previously thought to belong only to humans and the higher primates. Research at the American Psychological Association has shown that the average dog has the same developmental abilities as a human toddler, recognizing anywhere from approximately 165 to 250 words, as well as understand signs, symbols, and gestures, as we know that body language is a strong communication skill in canines. They are the only animals that keep our gaze intently and focus directly on us for information, direction and guidance. It is up to us then and how we, as humans, use that focus wisely to teach them that makes all the difference for them.
