2.4 miles at a heading of 135° ( or southeast to you lubbers) from Readings HQ at 12th and Market in Philadelphia and across the Delaware River once stood this fabulous terminal at the foot of Kaighn Ave in Camden, NJ. Built to replace to old terminal at Kaighns Point which according to city officials had become a fire trap due to its all wood structure at a cost of 3 million dollars. The ferrys operated from Chestnut St to the terminal on a short ride either direction. Trains departed here for Atlantic City as advertised Every hour,on the hour, within the hour with a 47 minute timetable schedule. On express trains after passing through the interlocking at KR Tower and rounding the curve at Bulson Street, the engineman shoved the throttle to the roof and it wasnt not shut until 50 some miles later around Pleasantville for a two mile session of high speed braking. Photo taken opening day on 14 May 1924. The terminal would only last 10 years or so before being abandoned in the consolidation or Reading and PRR assets in South Jersey forming the PRSL. May I have a time machine please?? Reading Company photo from my collection.
