2, 422 Killed By Road Accidents In Six Months- FRSC Report [caption id=attachment_87485 align=alignleft width=300 caption=Accident involving multiple vehicles on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway][/caption] The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has revealed that 2,422 people have been killed and 11, 961 injured in 3, 708 accidents between January and June 2013 on major highways in the country. The agency made this known during a media briefing organised to launch a new strategy tagged `Operation Octopus as part of efforts to reduce road accidents. At the media briefing in Abuja, the Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Jonas Agwu said that the new strategy became necessary after their Dashboard Report for Week 42 revealed six crash-prone routes in the country. Agwu further explained that the operation will complement previous intervention patrol on some routes including Kaduna-Zaria Road, Benin-Asaba Road, Abuja-Lokoja Road and many others. “These are the corridors in the country, where we believe if we keep sustaining our efforts on, we should be able to bring down crashes,” he said. “These six critical corridors are corridors that, based on our weekly dashboard report, are areas where incidents of road traffic crashes have called for our own intervention to ensure that we hit the target of what we have set out.” According to him, 2,605 personnel, 136 patrol vehicles, 32 ambulances, 11 tow trucks and motorcycles have been deployed for the two-week operation. The FRSC spokesman however appealed to motorists to exhibit the right driving attitude and avoid speeding. “All we are saying to Nigerians is that bad roads don’t cause accident; bad vehicles don’t cause crashes; it is the bad use of the roads and the vehicle,” he said. “So, we appeal to Nigerians to change their driving attitude. As the roads get better, don’t be tempted to say you want to do 120 kilo metres per hour; cut down that speed. As the roads get better, don’t be tempted to say you can drive and use your phone at the same time. So, for us, what is predominant in terms of the indices that will change a lot of things is the change in attitude. And that is why our theme for ‘ember’ months for 2013 is ‘Change that attitude and bring down crashes.” he added. The crusade will begin on November 1st and the operation would be on the six critical road corridors across the country.
