2 DAYS, 1 NIGHT (Deux Jeurs, Un Nuit) By Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne CAST: Marion Cotillard, Fabrizio Rongione GENRE: Belgian drama (English Subtitles) MISS KITTY SCORE: 3.5 out of 5 95% and a 5-star score on Rotten Tomatoes, Winner: Sydney Film Prize, Sydney Film Festival 2014 Written and directed by two-time Palme d’Or-winning filmmakers, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Lenfant, The Kid on a Bike), this film puts us front and centre with everyday people who struggle to keep their jobs. Academy Award-winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) plays Sandra, a married woman with two children who is made redundant after experiencing a nervous breakdown. Redundancies happen all the time all over the world, but in this scenario the manager has made staff choose between getting their €1,000 bonus and keeping Sandra on—an ethical dilemma for all concerned. The timid Sandra is encouraged by a workmate and her own husband to spend the weekend (hence the title) approaching those due to take part in a re-vote to ask them to vote to keep her job, which will mean they will lose their much-needed bonus. The reactions are mixed, and begging people she knows need the bonus is humiliating for Sandra. Its raw and cant help but have the viewer think about what they would do in such a dilemma. Cotillards performance is outstanding as usual.
