Illustrator: Mark Sasso. Photographer: John Harrell. Sword-and-sorcery maven Ronnie James Dio keeps trucking in these Lord Of The Rings/Harry Potter times with KILLING THE DRAGON, his ninth studio album. Retaining the same line-up as 2000s MAGICA, the only change comes in the shape of former Hurricane/House Of Lords guitarist Doug Aldrich. Although its easy to dismiss Dio the lyricist as some guy who tends to write about rainbows, spells and other fantasy-linked matter, this particular outing has him penning allegories firmly rooted in the 21st century. The galloping title track alludes to electronic serfdom and digital dreams while taking aim at the grip computers and the internet have on society. Rock & Roll addresses the knee-jerk self-censorship some radio stations perpetuated immediately following 9/11s tragic events. The longtime supporter of the charity The Children of the Night enlisted the aid of the Kings Harbor Church Childrens Choir to deliver the poignant-but-heavy Throw Away Children. The rocking Push features an Aldrich guitar solo that cleaves closely to predecessor Vivian Campbells penchant for tossing in Middle Eastern-flavored flourishes, while Scott Warrens keyboard runs on Before The Fall bring to mind Deep Purple great Jon Lord. eBay Product ID: EPID3486455 Ronnie James Dio From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Ronnie James Dio Ronnie-James-Dio Heaven-N-Hell 2009-06-11 Chicago Photoby Adam-Bielawski.jpg Background information Birth name Ronald James Padavona Born July 10, 1942 Portsmouth, New Hampshire, United States Died May 16, 2010 (aged 67) Houston, Texas, United States[1] Genres Heavy metal, hard rock, blues rock [2][3] Occupations Musician, songwriter, producer Instruments Vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards, trumpet, french horn Years active 1957–2010 Labels Atlantic, Decca, Derby, Eagle, Eagle Rock Entertainment, Electrosound Group Midwest, Epic, I.R.S., Interfusion, Jove, Kapp, Lawn, Line, Mayhem, MCA, MGM, Niji Entertainment Group, Parkway, Polydor, Purple, Reb, Reprise, Rhino, Roadrunner, Safari, Sanctuary, Seneca, Spitfire, Stateside, Swan, Valex, Vertigo, Warner Bros. He fronted numerous groups including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own band, Dio. He is credited with popularizing the metal horns hand gesture in metal culture and is known for his medieval themed lyrics. Dio possessed a powerful versatile vocal range capable of singing both hard rock and lighter ballads and according to Rainbow guitarist Ritchie Blackmore upon hearing him sing, I felt shivers down my spine.[4][5] Dio sold over 47 million albums throughout his career. Dio listened to a great deal of opera while growing up, and was influenced vocally by American tenor Mario Lanza.[7] His first and only formal musical training began at age 5 learning to play the trumpet.[7]During high school, Dio played in the school band and was one of the youngest members selected to play in the schools official Dance Band. It was also during high school that Dio formed his first rock-n-roll group, the Vegas Kings (the name would soon change to Ronnie and the Rumblers, and then Ronnie and the Red Caps). Though Dio began his rock-n-roll career on trumpet, he quickly added bass guitar to his skillset once he assumed singing duties for the group. Dio graduated from Cortland High School in 1960. Though he claimed in a later interview to have been offered a scholarship to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music, he did not pursue it due to his continuing interest in rock-n-roll music.[8] Instead, after graduation, he attended the University at Buffalo, majoring in Pharmacology.[9] He only attended from 1960 to 1961, and played trumpet in the universitys concert band, and did not graduate.[6] Despite being known for his powerful singing voice, Dio claimed never to have taken any vocal training.[5] Rather, he attributed his singing ability to the use of correct breathing techniques learned while playing trumpet. Let us all be thankful that Ozzys retirement didnt stick. It supposedly lasted for three days, after which he got bored and started working on this project. Heavy, riff-intensive tunes, progressive song structures and a little psychedelia give OZZMOSIS a definite Sabbath flavor. Ozzy must have been in touch with whatever inspired early classics like PARANOID and MASTERS OF REALITY. Witness the extremely chunky Thunder Underground, which can stand up next to Sweet Leaf and Symptom Of The Universe as an archetype of hard rock. The trippy guitar in Ghost Behind My Eyes and Denial are not some young Ozzy-wannabe going for a retro sound--this man was there, PlanetCaravaning. Still, this heavy metal daddy in touch with his roots is also hip to the genres latest sound. OZZMOSIS has a live, up-front feeling, thanks to producer Michael Beinhorn (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden). Zakk Wyldes huge, raw guitar also plays a major role. He provides scorching solos, lush textures and juicy fills with a muscular tone and minimal effects--the perfect complements to Osbournes songwriting. But more important than the raging guitars and the big sound is attitude. Ozzys spunk has indeed rejected retirement. His songs still spew biting commentary at whoever will listen. Your bulls**t culture licking cant stop the deathwatch ticking/Youre only mortal after all, he warns on Thunder Underground. Ozzy himself may not be immortal, but OZZMOSIS sounds like it is. eBay Product ID: EPID52961378 BIP1407212DSKTDDOOO424824 More Metal, Rock, Pop & Other CDs, DVDs, Guitar/Music Instruction, VHS Tapes, Video Games & Software, Entertainment Memorabilia & Books at my ebay store Bear In Paradise at: stores.ebay/Bear-In-Paradise
