2 Kings 1:9 When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away. And Elisha replied, Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor. 1 Kings 3:5&9 That night the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, What do you want? Ask, and I will give it you! Solomon asked the Lord to Give me an understanding heart so that so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. Are your motives right ? Elisha was Elijah assistant, he followed Elijah for the rest of His ministry while on earth. He learn how to lead and be a well prophet, since he was anionted to succeed Elijah . Elisha knew he had a huge shoe to fill in once Elijah was taken up to heaven, and he wanted to be more of a leader than Elijah. So Elisha asked to inherit a double share of his spirit before Elijah left and the Lord granted his request. Elisha didnt ask in selfish motives but asked in willingness, wanting to do more for the Lord, he wanted to continue Elijah works as a leader of the prophets, he wanted to be like his leader Elijah, but even greater he knew he had an huge shoe to fill, so he asked for a double share, so that he may accomplish more for GOD . Solomon was David son and the Lord promised that he will raise one of David descendant, his own offspring and will make his kingdom strong and he will be the one to build the Lords temple, and the Lord will secure his royal throne forever. And just as the Lord promised, Solomon, who is David offspring, became king. Instead of Solomon asking the Lord, for fame or richiest while he was on the throne Solomon asked God for an wise and understanding heart to govern the Lords people. These two mens intentions were not for selfish gain but simply to please the Lord and do the Lords work well. For an example outside of the bible, many will usually earnestly seek God wanting to become singers dancing, actors, to have an amazing voice that touch many lives or have crazy dance moves like M.J, or simply play a role with Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington etc ... but they only want all of this for their own gain, so people can praise them, but God was no where in their plans they only involve him in their plans when they pray to him asking him for it with the intentions to please themselves and not the Lord, making it seems like it was for the Lord but in actuality it was for them, a man heart is very deceptive, I was just like that, I wanted things and asked for thing that was only to please my self, so that I may have the big crowds, fame etc ...I wanted the fame and money , I wanted to build a foundation on wealth not realizing once my wealth goes away so will I. I thank God for not giving me half the things I asked for in my ignorance, because who wouldve known where I couldve been. Instead of wanting to be known as the wealthiest king, Solomon asked for wisdom to govern the people, instead of wanting to inherit double for selfish gain, Elisha ask for a double share so that he may do even more for the LORD. I encourage you all to keep praying being persistent asking the Lord whatever you desire, but I also encourage you all to make sure your motives are pure, do you want this to please yourself and others, or do you want to be all that you can be, to lead the Lords people well, to be a great example, and be an influence to others etc ... *Think about it ... What are your motive? Are your motives right ? 1 Thessalonians 2:4 Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts.
