2 Samuel 21:15-17, NKJV When the Philistines were at war again - TopicsExpress

2 Samuel 21:15-17, NKJV When the Philistines were at war again with Israel, David and his servants with him went down and fought against the Philistines; and David grew faint. Then Ishbi-Benob, who was one of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose bronze spear was three hundred shekels, who was bearing a new sword, thought he could kill David. But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid, and struck the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, You shall go out no more with us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel. Heres a great moment for a warrior-king. Davids men, who have followed him fearlessly into battle for years, now recognize that David is more important to them as a leader than he is as a warrior. They have always fought with him and for him, but now they will do his fighting for him[1]. They recognize that his place as leader is a light that must be preserved for the nation. He needs them and they need him. Its an interdependence that has always been seen on the battlefield, but now it has spread to every part of life. While Im not sure how David felt, having the sword taken from his hand, he should have felt the great reward of their respect for him and the value they placed on him as a leader. Many times, this is what God is doing when He takes certain things away from us. The time has come for our focus to be shifted, our skills to be redirected, and our time to be used more wisely. Remember that Gods desire is our growth, not our comfort with what we have always done. New days require new wisdom and new actions. Like David, we may have reached a new phase where what weve always done no longer applies. ---Dr. Mike Clarensau serves as Senior Director of the Healthy Church Network.
