2 States - Indias first modern-day chick flick! Just saw 2 States. And it was exactly what I expected. A rather unappetising collection of the most popular North-India v South-India clichés which go on to form Indias first modern-day chick flick thats trying to pass itself off as important in a world of innovative filmmaking stories that constitute the Indian film industry today. This is a clear example of how, despite the best efforts and intentions, it is almost impossible to make a good film from bad writing. And that is what the book is - terrible writing. Another reason why the genius of Raju Hirani and Pubali Choudhary should not be confused as Chetan Bhagats writing being good. Coz its not. The book was terrible. The movie is slightly better. Writer-Director Abhishek Varman has really tried to work on the original book to try and make it as palatable a movie as possible, but I guess it was like trying to make Rakhi Sawant classy. Not possible. Not everything about the movie is bad. Alia Bhatt is fantastic. Ummmm... And... actually, thats really it as far as the good goes. Arjun Kapoor is decent, albeit a little monotonous. Almost everyone else acts well but they play characters that are too stereotyped & clichéd to be memorable. Music isnt good. Cinematography is up & down with some really great visuals interspersed with scenes where it is blatantly obvious that 2 separate cameras have been used and the visual matching has not worked. All-in-all, if you missed 2 States, it would probably make little difference to the richness of your life...
