2 States is refreshingly realistic. Had a low expectation level because of a bias against the potential of the new crop of actors but both of them have done well. Had a low expectation level also because the way the movie was being marketed with multiple brand tie-ups had conveyed the impression that it was just another yuppie romcom with superficial sentiments. But was pleasantly surprised. The film is emotionally engaging and follows Chetan Bhagats eponymous novel to a T. Love stories against a North-South backdrop are as old as the super-successful Ek Duuje Ke Liye of more than 30 years back but the subject has been handled with a lot more sensitivity and much less melodrama in 2 States. The regional stereotypes have been rigorously reinforced in this one also but thats not the main thrust of the movie. The film is centred more around the familial dynamics of Krish. His convoluted relationship with his father is a raw nerve with him and has been very delicately portrayed. Amrita Singh is a scene-stealer and nobody couldve played the Punjabi possessive mother better than her. Minor drawbacks: IIM Ahmedabad is just a subtext in the movie. The placement interviews look amateurish. Bottomline: Chetan Bhagat should feel fortunate that 4 of his novels have been made into films till now. Revolution 2020 is also readymade movie material. And there are takers already. Some guys have all the luck.
