2 cops killed as gunmen attack cardiologist’s residence Two policemen, guarding eminent Kashmiri Cardiologist Dr. Sheikh Jalal-ud-din were killed while the doctor himself was injured in an attack by some unidentified gunmen on Thursday. The attack was carried out outside the doctor’s residence at Namlabal area of Pampore at about 4:05 PM. 64-year-old Jalal-ud-din is former director of premier medical institute SKIMS Soura. “The doctor was attacked outside his residence in Namlabal area of the town,” said a senior police official from the area. The police official said the policemen were killed on spot, while Jalal-ud-din received bullet injuries in his eye and abdomen. “He was shifted to the nearby sub-district Hospital, Pampore; however the doctors there stated his condition to be critical and referred him to SKIMS for specialized treatment,” the police official said. While no militant outfit has so far claimed the responsibility for the attack, police sources reveal that the target of the attack might have been the policemen and not the doctor. “The doctor does not have any sort of political affiliation and being a police protected person does not necessarily turn one into a militant target,” said a police source, “Militants have been threatening to target cops and I think it is a part of that.” The locals describe the doctor as a noble soul and maintain that the doctor did not have any political affiliation, apart from the fact that his wife happens to be a daughter of former Congress leader and Minister Late Ghulam Muhamad Mir Rajpuri. The police and the paramilitary CRPF cordoned off the area in Namlabal Pampore and launched a manhunt to nab the attackers.
