Monica Sayers The Yin Yan Duo yinyanduo/ On September 20th, 2013, just a shade over a year ago, I received an email from Monica Sayers who had attended a Bobby Galinsky Masterclass/Clinic in Sydney earlier in the year. She was planning on attending a second one in Sydney and this time, she had an agenda: A very personal story that was going to be HER story and HER vehicle to transform her from a busy actress in local productions and ads, into a major screen presence. She shared with me that her parents had been hugely successful cabaret singers and show performers, and that prior to meeting, her father had been lead singer in one of the most successful and popular bands in Hong Kong, called MOD EAST. They were the Chinese Beatles. And her late mother had been a high fashion Chinese/Australian model and singer in a successful band here in Australia. When her dad moved to Australia, he auditioned for her moms band....and didnt get the gig... But he persisted... :) The YIN YAN DUO became the Sonny and Cher of Australasia and were on every major TV show, travelled the world and were ready to go to the next step to conquer North America until one fateful night when they made a decision to hang up their sequins, and let it all go---for love. In a totally unique and complex feel-good musical that is The Sapphires meets Walk the Line, Monica is embodying her late mother to play her as an homage to this amazing lady and amazing story and what could have been the biggest band of its kind, anywhere, and why one night on a cruise ship on the high seas: Fame came second to Family. Monica has shared that this is her Good Will Hunting, a vehicle for her to tell a very personal story and showcase her acting not just as an Asian / Australian actress....but as an actress on a world stage. And like Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, she needed an experienced director and bankable actor to draw people in for maximum exposure. She spent weeks and months organizing the facts and background material for the story, entered my Mentorship Program, and I have been honoured to have the opportunity to have her share her dream with me, so that I have written her dream. Currently she has a completed treatment and we are in early stages of script. The project has already gained serious attention with an Academy Award (c) winning director and an Emmy Award (c) winning actress to provide the bankability for this project so that it can garner worldwide attention and not be relegated to art house status and the Zone of Death that often plagues Australian films at the box office and internationally. Its not a sure fire method, but with a significant but restrained budget, some key components already in place, and the biggest and deepest and most enormous additional market of China beckoning outside Australia and North America for this project, it will certainly be the stepping stone for Monicas career that should open doors and bring people to HER, rather than her spending months, years, and decades knocking on doors. Monica has combined this gargantuan effort alongside her current acting career, teaching, a partner and his young daughter and managed to singlehandedly bring this dream from an old scrapbook to the brink of our next step in just 53 WEEKS!
