20 High School kids got up this morning to scribble some last - TopicsExpress

20 High School kids got up this morning to scribble some last Biology notes, or speed-read Hamlet on the car ride in to school. What they didnt expect was blind fear and rage. When moments like this happen, every single time we think about the kid that we got to name, and the fleeting possibility that she may also walk into the fury. What we are still failing to do is to see this as a segment of our own society. We are instead, shocked. This was a classmate, and his story has a root, and that root is where we begin. In a classroom elsewhere, is a time bomb stressed out and isolated from mental and emotional care. Im not saying we should love the boy who butchered his friends. Im saying we should help prevent the next shockwave. We should teach our kids to notice and protect the self-loathing, we should arm our educators with the skillsets to catch early symptoms, and we should not worship the pecking order. I dont know a single human who doesnt abhor some of their own lapses in character. I dont know a human who doesnt have a signature loneliness. We have to accompany our society, and know all of its parts. In order to love my daughter I need to show her that I love my society. I love the destitute vagrant who rages on the train, and I am one breath away from being him, a few chemicals, really. He has a beginning. A few years after his beginning we failed him, and he is a reminder of our failure. To loath him is to loath my incapability to save him from his existence.
