20 May 1948 --- POPULAR YOUNG COUPLE MARRIED SUNDAY AFTERNOON --- White Lillies, gladioli, greenery and candelabrum, lighted by candle – lighters; Miss. Jo Ann Palmatory and Miss. Juanita Lyon, decorated the Christian Church Sunday afternoon, May16, for the wedding of Miss. Jo Ann Burton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Burton, of this place, and Mr. Dewey Goins, son of Mrs. Opal Goins, of Moberly. Rev. William McMillan, pastor of the church, officiated. Mr. Burton escorted his daughter down the aisle, which was strewn with rose pedals from baskets carried by Janice Ann Robb and Judy Lee Stonner, niece and cousin, respectively, of the bride, followed by little David White, ring bearer, to the altar, where they were met by the bridegroom and his best man, Mr. J. Olan Robb. Both bride and groom were born and reared here and are among our best known and most popular young folks, and each is a graduate of the Higbee High School, the bride being a member of the class of 1948. the groom is a veteran of World War II and served three and a half years in the European theater, and has a fine position with the Missouri Power & Light Co. , in Moberly. 20 May 1948 --- OLD CHURCH SEES IT’S SECOND WEDDING--- The wedding of Dewey Goin and Miss. Jo Ann Burton in the Christian Church last Sunday, was the second event of the kind in the history of the church, which has been standing almost seventy years. The first one being that of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Elgin, in the early 1880’s . 7 Dec 1906 -- CHAS. ELGIN DEAD – Charles F. Elgin, whose critical illness was noted in last week’s NEWS, died at his home in this place at 10:30 p.m. Friday, November 30, 1906, aged 62 years. Interment made in the City Cemetery 3 June 1893 -- OBITUARY- Andrew J. Lessley-- Bro. Lessley was converted and joined the Christian church in 1874, The large church which seats six hundred (Transcription of the Old Higbee News by-Kathy Bowlin. Article given to me by-Roberta Sheridan) (ron’s note --- The old Christian Church building is still with us. It was the first church building in Higbee. It shared its facilities with the Baptist & Methodist congregations for quite some time. Dewey & Jo Ann have a daughter, now known to us as Mrs. Cathy Stuck, who now resides with her husband Tom, in Moberly. Janice Robb, whom we now know as Mrs. John Spilman, was about six yrs old at the wedding. Her mother , Mrs. Olan (Sara)Robb was Jo ann’s sister. The ring-bearer David White , whose name became, David Parchert, (his mother married a big fellow by the name of Ox Parchert ) was in my class at the Higbee High School. )
