20 Oct 1944 - General Douglas MacArthur fulfills his pledge to the people of the Philippine Islands of I shall return... with Allied Armed Forces landing on the island of Leyte on this date. And so began the largest naval battle in history - the Second Battle of the Philippine Sea, renamed in US naval records as The Battle for Leyte Gulf (the first Battle of the Philippine Sea having been fought during the invasion of the Marshall Islands in June 1944) My uncle, William K. Taylor, along with the men of his light aircraft carrier, CVL23 USS Princeton, were active participants in both naval battles. Today marks the anniversary of that action.
