20 years ago this week (May 20th - 22nd, 1994) The Great Music Experience was held at Tōdai-ji Temple in Nara City, Osaka, Japan. The musicians included INXS, Bob Dylan, Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, Joni Mitchell and more. The concept was East meets West, so for the Western artists to combine their own music with traditional Japanese music. The stage was set in front of the worlds largest wooden building housing the largest Buddha statue in the world. It was hoped that the event would be the first of seven annual concerts that would take place at some of the worlds architectural treasures - the sites it had in mind included the Pyramids, Chinas Forbidden City and the Taj Mahal. But future concerts never took place. The final nights concert was broadcast on TV to over 50 countries worldwide. Legendary Beatles producer Sir George Martin was sound producer and musical consultant. The festival was backed by UNESCO and the United Nations.
