20 years ago today I made my first tentative steps into the world of nursing. I was a young and fairly naive 17yo having just just finished my HSC the afternoon before and at 0700 I was at the nursing home ready to start. Ive since made the wise move and worked my way backwards through to paediatrics, neonates and midwifery; Ive worked in Griffith, Sydney, Wodonga, Albury, Darwin, Alice Springs and all over NSW, including a day trip to Noumea and volunteer work in PNG. Ive met some wonderful people, built up networks that have lasted years, Ive had mentors to whom I am eternally grateful for showing me how nursing and midwifery should be done. Ive seen life begin and end, Ive been there for the highs and the lows. Ive laughed and cried with colleagues, patients and their families. Ive stressed myself stupid with multiple post graduate courses, though Im actually quite proud of achieving them. Finally, Ive made lifelong friends, learnt a lot about life, learnt a lot about myself and committed myself to my passion.
