20 years ago today, Minnie Sanchez (My mom who raised me), passed away. She was born in D’Hanis TX on April 21, 1923. All of my family and friends know what a wonderful human being she was, and that she’s now in Heaven. She passed away on March 31, 1994...a few minutes before midnight. As a child, she knew what it was to have to pick cotton and other crops to help her family survive (“la pisca”) … she knew what it was to have to attend a different school because of her “Mexican” lineage… she knew what it was to have to attend separate church services as well… she knew what it was not to be allowed to enter certain eateries and establishments… the separate use of water fountains… (yes, Hispanics suffered this too)… the name calling… the poverty… the hunger… the illnesses… the premature deaths of family members… and much more… … … She knew what these things were… and she knew what they felt like… … … It is quite poetic, that March 31 has now coincidentally been declared Cesar Chaves Day…
