200 years ago this day, aboard the HMS Minden, Francis Scott Key witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry. The next day he wrote the poem Defence of Fort MHenry. This poem would later become the Star Spangled Banner! The war of 1812 ended shortly afterwards. It couldve ended differently if it wasnt for the brave men of Fort McHenry. All the Americans had to do was lower the flag that was flying over the fort, and the British wouldve excepted their surrender. During the bombardment, the flag took multiple direct hits. Each time it started to fall, someone from the Fort would run out and hold it up. The British were zeroed in on the flag and were intent on forcing it down. With each volley, the man holding the flag would die and another one would take his place. These brave souls willingly sacrificed themselves for the Flag and the Nation. It is up to us to honor their sacrifice and memory to this nation.
